That's some serious eye candy. I don't think I've seen a game with pixel graphics this dynamic and involved. But I also haven't played or paid attention to many 2d games in a long time. I'm mainly aware of various classic 2d games from watching stuff like The Angry Nerd and Ross' Game Dungeon.

Which begs the question, what other 2d pixelated games do stuff this involved with their graphics? What's the most visually impressive 2d game you've seen or played? This looks really really sexy.

I don't know if there are any videos or articles that analyze its graphics specifically, but even just the launch trailer is probably a decent source if you want to see some examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvGaSPTcTxc

Thanks, that is beautiful. Now that you've jogged my memory I'm vaguely aware of maybe a handful of games I've seen that do that kind of dynamic graphics. Everything treated as a completely flat cross section and they do lots of fancy particle shading, simulated flames and fires and gases and lights. The stuff mentioned in OP's article, I still don't think I've seen. The trick with normal maps and sprite shadows is so simple but it works suuuuper well. I've played around with Unity and I don't know if every single unity game is like this but the way I was learning that it handled 2d graphics was simply to fix the camera in a 3d space and render the sprites on top of each other, so that you have a game that looks two dimensional but it has all of the fancy stuff like Unity's lighting engine still available. That's what they're utilizing in Grave Keeper apparently. I hadn't considered how useful that could be.

They put a ton of time into making the audio and graphics good and never actually fleshed out the core gameplay loop, NPC interactions or the whole latter half of the game. It's pretty, but please don't buy the game because of that. It's fun for an hour and then a slog for 40 to get to the ending, where they literally joke about selling DLC containing the things they promised in beta and then cut for release.
