Anyone play Tekken?
I bought Tekken 7 about 6 months ago and have been seriously addicted to it ever since. My friend used to have all the old tekken games when we were really young but back then I just used to mash buttons.
It's a tough game to learn and even play passably but the process of improving is very satisfying. Currently I've got Asuka to Vindicator (2nd yellow rank) and plan on sticking with her until I (eventually) reach high orange/ first red rank. Dabbled a little with Kazumi/Paul but I don't think switching characters is a good idea at this point.
So do any tildinista's play Tekken?
I played a bit on Steam on release, and scraped into 2nd/3rd green rank on Arisa. I'm not great at fighting games, but I ended up not liking the 3d movement so much. Tekken is really solid, though, and I can see why it's so popular.
Neat, I've never really played any other fighting game seriously until now. What didn't you like about the 3D movement?
I'm just really too used to 2d fighters, maybe. But to be specific, needing to guess whether to sidestep on defense -- and in some matchups/situations, which direction to sidestep -- is probably the most obvious. Also, the enormous movelists resulting from buttons doing different things in different movement states: while rising, while running, sidestep attacks, etc. I had a lot of trouble with fff+X inputs in combos, and it took a while for me to get iWR labbed out.
I realize these things do have analogues that just look/feel different in 2d fighters, but I personally just felt it was more difficult to grok Tekken than Guilty Gear or UNIST because of a combination of the movement and the insane number of matchups and matchup knowledge required in each to know when to take your turn.
There's a really useful sidestep guide (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JqXNv3Dnrj5PdMrPuIg5wvrVlZUyZBiAUUqXJhMxAnk/htmlview) that I reference a lot.
But yeah I get what you mean, it's a deep game. There's something like 40 characters and not having matchup knowledge can be deadly. Yesterday I played a Master Raven (rare to see) who wasn't great but I didn't really know anything about her moves so ended up losing heavily, next thing to learn I guess.
Oh wow, that's a neat resource. Thanks, bookmarked for when I do get the hankering for bashing people with chainsaw arms again.
Do you play on Steam or PS4, by the way?
PS4, username is MonsterHoopz if you have one as well.
I really aught to. The problem is that every time I think about Tekken I think about the terrible PS1 games. But the games have gotten so much better since then. Honestly, at this point it's probably better than any of the fighting games I prefer to play.
Tekken 3 blew my mind when it came out. Even Tekken 2 I used to play a lot.
Obviously the graphics have improved significantly, I think the fighting system has been refined as well with more emphasis on movement and less on huge combos.
