This may be the VR set I finally end up pulling the trigger on. Say what one will about how Steam Hardware has gone in terms of market performance, but the actual hardware has been amazing in my experience. Tons of great updates over time, high quality all around, and unreal performance for the price.
It leaves me expecting that this VR kit will perform a lot better in practice than on paper, just like their Controller and the Link have for me.
UploadVR posted some hands-on impressions that have some more details: https://uploadvr.com/valve-index-hands-on/ One thing of particular significance (that some gaming sites have already been...
One thing of particular significance (that some gaming sites have already been writing about) is that Valve confirmed they're working on a flagship VR game that will be out sometime this year:
There are no software bundles with Index at launch and Valve only confirmed a “flagship” VR game from Valve due in 2019 for all VR headsets which connect to Steam. Valve representatives declined to say anything more about it.
Ars Technica posted a (very long, multiple pages) article about it yesterday as well: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/04/valve-index-reveal-the-best-of-vrs-first-generation-but-is-it-worth-999/

Definitely on the pricier side of VR systems. It seems like it will probably have some nice enhancements and upgrades, but that's expensive enough that it probably won't attract many new people to VR.
I was really looking forward to this and I've got to say I'm pretty disappointed. A 120~130 fov and resolution bump over the Vive is nice but it's just not enough for me to justify a $500 purchase...

A 120~130 fov and resolution bump over the Vive is nice but it's just not enough for me to justify a $500 purchase when I could just go and get the Pimax 5k. I'm really disappointed that there is no eye tracking or any really unique feature here.
I'm glad the knuckles controllers work with my V.1.0 base stations though, so I'll pick those up.

Edit: on the more affordable end, Oculus's new offerings are available starting today, with the Quest especially being a good option for people that don't have a PC capable of running VR
