Humble Choice - January 2020

The second Humble Choice (the new version of Humble Monthly) is now available, with 12 choices for games this month:

  1. Middle-earth: Shadow of War
  2. Graveyard Keeper
  3. Two Point Hospital
  4. Dirt Rally 2.0 (and 3 DLCs: H2 RWD Double Pack, Opel Manta 400, The Porsche 911 RGT)
  5. Street Fighter V
  6. Bad North: Jotunn Edition
  7. TrailMakers
  8. Unrailed!
  9. Whispers of a Machine
  10. Them's Fightin' Herds
  11. Mages of Mystralia
  12. GRIP (and 1 DLC: Artifex Car Pack)

Having 12 choices this month is fairly significant, since it means that even people on the grandfathered "Classic" plan aren't able to take all the games and have to miss two of them. It seemed to be a pretty common assumption that there would always be 10 choices so Classic members would always still get everything, but that obviously isn't necessarily true.

I was surprised to see 12 games instead of 10 as well, though this confirms adds fuel to my suspicion that one of the behind-the-scenes drivers of Humble Choice is the data they're getting about which games people select. It's likely very valuable data for them to be able to know which games get selected by which demographics, which order they get selected in, and so on (I also think this is why the selection interface is very sub-optimal). With classic subscriptions getting all 10 games, they wouldn't get any "choice" data as people would just redeem all of the games. With 12, they're still getting data about which games people choose and leave out. I suspect that 12 will be the new standard moving forward.

With respect to the games, it's a pretty great lot and definitely worth the value of the subscription. I can only personally speak to GRIP but it's enjoyable as a futuristic combat racer. It does suffer from what plagues most racing games: a sameness that means it can have difficulty finding staying power. That said, while I didn't LOVE it, I did enjoy the time I spent with it.

EDIT: In case anyone's interested, I'm on the classic plan and selected everything but Them's Fightin' Herds (not interested) and Unrailed! (it looks neat but I'll probably play it with my friend group on the Switch when it comes out there). Some of the games I unlocked as gifts and will likely give away on our Tildes Game Gifting Group.

Separating my personal opinion out from the actual topic: I think this is a great selection, and used my Classic membership this month, after skipping the first month. There are a lot of excellent games in here, and while I wasn't massively interested in any of them (enough to buy them individually), getting multiple of them for effectively $1.20 USD each is an amazing deal.

The two games I chose not to take were Bad North (already have it on Epic Store, where it was given away for free) and TrailMakers (looks like a type of game I never really get into).

Some of my friends had been playing Unrailed! together and it looked like a lot of fun, very Overcooked-like. I'm looking forward to giving that a shot soon.
