Dumb question: Is this like Factorio except fighting enemies is the main goal, instead of a thing you do while following a larger goal? I'm curious about it, particularly after Steam started showing it to me and I found out it's an open-source game (like shapez.io, which also got recommended). I've downloaded it and tried it, but am just curious about how the game plays.

It's a bit of a tower defense game, where you have a simplified, factorio-like economy that supports your research and your defense. There's also buildings that build and deploy offensive drones, which you need in some levels. It's neat and free, so give it a shot. If you've just tried the first level or two, stick with it a bit. A few techs should quickly pop up that make the game a lot more interesting (among these I rate more complex production processes as well as the buildings that send resources off for research). If you like it, send the guy a few quid.

I literally just poked around for a minute a couple times, but I'll check it out.

I played some of it. If you like the first bit of Factorio where you start building your factory up, setting up mines, etc. you'll like this game. I found it pretty repetitive though, as you have to do that every level, and it just made me want to play Factorio to be honest.

There's also a mobile version which is pretty cool but also kinda tricky to control (due to touchscreen interface).
