A pretty good intro to a pretty complex and somewhat controversial topic. Its good to see someone going out of the comfort zone and delving into something that could be very bad for their image - and this video does a decent job of staying at arms reach, so hopefully theres no blowback for exploring the topic.
But you do get a weird intersection of things when it comes to adult games. You have the obvious intersections of gaming in general and adult content, but theres also a clash of cultures contributing (Japan and America being the main two). Add in that ficitonal content can explore more ...niche or extreme concepts than traditional porn - and the world of adult video games is very unique. There are a lot of questions of ethics and morality that come up - but as I mentioned earlier, it can be very tough to ask or delve into them. These topics can be poisonous to someone's career - and there are rarely nuanced discussions on these topics in the mainstream. An example would be a politician refusing to look at something like Romeo and Juliet laws due to how close that topic is to underage sex or child pornography - most politicians won't go anywhere near there.
But there are definitely some interesting topics and questions...though it can often be hard to step back to try and remain objective and open minded. Japan in particular has very different laws and opinions on what is acceptable in fictional media - so a typical westerner is going to feel very out of place, very fast. Notably age, extreme fetishes like gore/bestiality/incest, and a very different culture when it comes to consent/rape. You'll also see fictional things like anthropomorphized animals/concepts that don't necessarily have a direct counterpart in the real world. Many of those things compound to create some very unique questions...if you stick cat ears and a tail on a fictional girl, is that bestiality? Whats the age-of-consent for a fictional monster? Should age even come into play for something completely fictional - or reframed, are child pornography laws meant to protect real children, or punish people for liking those body types? Does the artist determine the age of the character, or should they be judged on their body type (Is it ok if its a 500 year old loli dragon? Is a drawn short+petite+hairless character considered a child's body type, despite that body type existing on real adults?). For those with a hardwired extreme/illegal fetish, does fictional media of their fetish enable them or provide a safe outlet? Has being pushed away form mainstream distribution outlets forced/enabled more extreme content into games?
Lots of questions. Lots of charged emotions. I don't necessarily want to have those discussions (on here or IRL) - but theres definitely a lot to explore.
