Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
After the holidays I’ve been back on Keto for three weeks. I stopped shortly before Thanksgiving and tried to just eat alright enough in between the holidays. However in between Christmas and New Years I went all out and ate a lot of fast food, chips, cookies, all the good stuff that I hadn’t eaten in a while.
Obviously I ended up gaining some weight back, but nothing too dramatic.
In the midst of all that stuff I went to the doctor because I had a wound that lasted from October to December. They tested my blood sugar and I found out that I’m no longer pre-diabetic! I’m well below it now. That was the initial reason I decided to do the diet (that and I was also way overweight). I had already suspected I wasn’t anymore since all my symptoms went away (most notably the black skin in the back of my neck).
I went back on Keto for a few reasons. For one I just feel better on it, and secondly it’s just easier for me to be on a more restrictive diet. I’m also still trying to lower my blood sugar. My A1C is now at a 5.0, but I want to get it back down to the 4 range.
I hit a plateau with my weight a few weeks before ending the diet. And I realized the reason was because I was still eating too many calories. A few too many almonds here and there, and eating too many pork rinds. This time around I’m also going to be eating less, and limiting my snacking, and also eating a cleaner diet (so less pork rinds and bacon and more broccoli and spinach). It’s already been working, I’m already lower than when I left the diet.
I only plan on doing this until March. If only because I want to eat and drink at the Alamo Drafthouse while I’m watching The Batman. And after that I’m going to try to stick to Mediterranean style diet (though with more liberties and I won’t be thinking about it as a “diet”).
I’ve also started working out again. And while I did lose some strength, I didn’t lose as much as I thought I would with a month-long break. Though I feel very sore again.
I feel good though, I think that break helped me mentally.
After 6 months of diet and exercise, I finally reached my goal weight. I started at 244 lbs and weighed in at 214 lbs a few days ago. Technically, I still need to lose 4 lbs to be considered "normal weight". I intend to keep losing some weight, just taking it a few pounds at a time and reassessing things. But I'm not really too worried about it at this point.
Most of my exercise has been walking, and it's been harder the last few weeks as the temperature has been regularly dropping to -30. But I've managed to power through.
My biggest challenge has been finding the time to exercise. Between work and family I only really get a few hours of free time a day and sometimes not even that. I've been thinking about starting to run, mostly because I can burn more calories in a shorter time. It's way too icy outside right now, so I think I'll hold off on that until the spring.
I have 281 days in a row of meeting my step goal, but I feel that when I get my booster on Saturday that Sunday is going to be rough. I'm really hoping to continue my streak and make it to a full year.
I started Ring Fit Adventure a few weeks ago. I had zero expectation going into it but it actually produces a very difficult workout. I set it to the hardest difficulty and consistently hit ~10 calories a minute with my heart rate staying above 130 BPM for most of the time I spend playing it.
I've been in a rut for about 2 months now after running and weight lifting consistently for most of last year. Some nut decided to steal my apartment community's weights so I quit going there, especially now with Omicron as well. So I have focused on my walks primarily as a way to keep me grounded. I was tracking my calories for the most part as well, but decided to give myself a little break from that to see how well my eating habits stick. The biggest thing that I am trying to overcome lately is the sweet tooth I developed over the holidays where I crave something sweet to eat at night before going to bed. As long as I don't buy that stuff, I should be good to abstain and hopefully break the cravings.
