US hospitals take steps to conserve IV fluid supply after hurricane Helene strikes critical factory in North Carolina

    Working in a peds hospital, I'd love to see pharmacy start issuing 100 mL or 500 mL bags for kids who require boluses, but their 10-20 mL/kg calculates out so we're not burning a standard 1000 mL...

    Working in a peds hospital, I'd love to see pharmacy start issuing 100 mL or 500 mL bags for kids who require boluses, but their 10-20 mL/kg calculates out so we're not burning a standard 1000 mL bag. That said, another solid solution would be for the FDA to do something like they do with their emergency Atropine/Pralidoxime supplies, and allow for extending expiration dates on supplies kept in "acceptable" temperature/lighting/humidity conditions.

    There’s a decent amount of unnecessary IVF (iv fluids) in the hospital, but the culture shift away from providers slapping down a bag of saline on every single patient is going to be a challenge

    Really we need to emphasize that only patients with a kidney injury or NPO (nothing by mouth) are those that need IVF. This is mostly for our med-surg units though, but I hope we don’t run out too soon for our ICU patients sake…
