It’s infuriating how avoidable this is. It’s also infuriating that I know supposedly smart people in my life who’ve become very vaccine skeptical since Covid.
Vaccines are one of the greatest miracles of modern science and conspiracy theorists are doing their damndest to undo that progress.

And the mRNA vaccine was a huge breakthrough that could turn into quick vaccines for many other viruses. I know there was a trial of a mRNA malaria vaccine with much greater efficacy than the existing one. I cannot imagine throwing away that progress and returning to the days of Polio putting people into iron lungs (although with the increase in conditions being associated with Long COVID, I'm not sure we haven't tried)
(I haven't kept up on the malaria mRNA vaccine for humans but I know there's also one being tested to prevent mosquitoes from reproducing if they're carrying it. Hope they work out!)

I'm hopeful countries where things like malaria are major problems still will be more open than the countries where losing a child to a disease like measles is still a major outlier
