World Toilet Day is an opportunity to think about one of many things we take for granted, and to consider the challenges facing individuals in communities lacking similar resources. World Toilet Day is obviously not a "happy" day, but we can "celebrate" it by reflecting on, and raising awareness about this and other consequences of inequality in the world, and possibly about steps that can be taken to address the causes and effects of that inequality.

This could fit in ~health or ~enviro.

3.4 billion people still live without safely managed sanitation services — nearly half the world’s population. (WHO/UNICEF, 2025)

At the current rates of progress, 3 billion people will still be living without safe toilets in 2030. (WHO/UNICEF, 2025)

Globally, to achieve safely managed sanitation for all will require, on average, a six-fold increase in the rate of progress. In low-income countries, progress needs to increase 18-fold to ensure at least basic sanitation. (WHO/UNICEF, 2025)

There's some kind of technological breakthrough that can help here, right? Plumbing, sewer and septic is also a huge part of homebuilding cost in societies with indoor plumbing. There's certainly a market as well as current costs that could offset adoption.

Maybe when Solar and other renewables become more portable / cheaper, we'll see more advanced in incineration toilets? There are already solar powered ones that don't need additional water, just air intake/out. The advantage is that they don't need a septic field, they can be retrofitted to homes without indoor plumbing, don't need running water, and can be mass produced and then deployed to remote locations. But they're (last I checked) $6000 (CAD) per toilet.

To be clear, a day recognizing men, and the struggles that come with masculinity is a good thing, and we should openly talk about those things. It's better for all of us.

However, if Men's Day came about from a toxic reactionary, "wHaT aBoUt mEn" its funny it coincides the way it does.
