What is your opinion of snuff tobacco?
I must preface by saying that no form of tobacco is safe for consumption, and no reasonable person should use tobacco for any reason other than maybe in religious ceremonies. I just happen to be an unreasonable person.
I took a bunch of my stuff that was stored in my mother's house this week, among them some snuff tobacco in a good state of conservation. I like the smell and the ritual. I went by a tobacco shop and bought two additional tiny containers of snuff -- mint, and cinnamon. It was very cheap. I enjoy using it throughout the day.
A lot of people snort it like cocaine, but that is not the way to do it. You should simply press your thumb into the snuff (which will get some of it on the thumb), block one nostril with said thumb, and then gently breathe with the other nostril. It has a high that is similar to smoking, but milder and more gradual. I find it very pleasant.
You shouldn't ever use tobacco. But, if you have used snuff tobacco, I would like to know how was your experience.
I had a brief affair with rapé (aka hapeh, note that accent on the e), South American snuff. Much stronger than european. Quickly was doing way too much. But i had one batch formulated with that psychedelic mimosa tree bark, and I swear it made it so I could see in the dark.
That is the one I have. Pretty powerful stuff as far as these go. I can see myself getting addicted. I'll have to quit it soon. It's "tasty".
A long while ago (like over a decade), snuff piqued my interest and I ended up buying a couple of tins, which turned out to be way too much and lasted for years. I definitely enjoy the aroma of tobacco and I found that I really did like the "good burn" of doing snuff.
I feel like nicotine just doesn't affect me all that much, because I have never felt a strong addiction to any type of tobacco (and not for lack of trying). Still, I ended up cutting way down on my snuff consumption over the years. It dries out your nostrils, sinuses and back of your throat, even if you're consuming it correctly. And—this is pretty gross—it will give you some really nasty boogers if you consume it regularly. Despite being "safer" than other types of tobacco, your nose still isn't really designed to ingest foreign organic material, it turns out.
Still, I keep a tin around in my desk drawer for the very occasional opportunity I take to do some snuff. Goes great with whisky or other dark liquors. Personally, I like a strong scotch snuff to get that really pleasurable burn.
It looks like snuff is actually pretty safe. Nicotine isn't a terrible drug - it's fairly addictive but it's not all that bad for you. Smoking is what's bad, and by far the worst way to tobacco, followed by chewing but, at least according to wikipedia, snuff has very little health risk and no discernable link to cancer.
Over the years I've put a lot of things up my nose that shouldn't have been there (including, on one very ill-advised evening, absinthe) but never snuff that I recall. I have always enjoyed the smell of tobacco - not smoking, which is horrible, just dry tobacco - although not quite enough to want to go out and buy a tin of snuff.
You would probably like snuff if used correctly, but it might feel too mild if you're used to consume stronger stuff through the nostrils.
I probably would but I have learned that I need to be careful with addictive substances even if they are relatively healthy. Interesting to hear about your experience though.
Liquid. From a teaspoon. Repeat until drunk. Which doesn't take long. It was the best absinthe I could afford but I was a poor student at the time, although in my defence we did have a very good local booze shop, so it wasn't terrible.
There was a brief trend among my friends at university for nasal insufflation of just about anything we could get our hands on, because it's a great way to get stuff into your bloodstream fast. Absinthe is OK. Vodka really stings. Red wine is surprisingly nice. Finely powdered weed less so. Caffeine tablets are horrible. Crushed ecstasy tablets are fun until someone ends up in hospital and nearly dies.
I'm genuinely amazed snuff didn't end up on the table. There was an excellent tobacco shop where I lived then, they would definitely have sold snuff. Maybe there were parties where there was snuff, but I don't remember if so.
I don't imagine snuff tobacco as a party drug. It's way too mild and not at all flashy. It's much weaker than a single puff off a cigarette. Nothing like cigars or tobacco hookahs.
Traditionaly, rapé is done with two people, one puffing the snuff into the nostrils of the other with a ceremonial applicator. It has a special name I forget.
I get the religious ceremony, but how would that work at a party environment?
It kinda sounds like a nightmare with a lot of chance for disaster. So yeah, youngsters would love it :P
What, you never shotgunned a j at a party? Kids these days.
I actually don't even know what you're talking about :P
I used to use rasspberry menthol. It would open my sinuses and everthing smelled great. It's been a few years though.
Oh yeah tobacco can definitely be a hobby. Much like wine. Cigars, pipes, cigarettes, etc. You can learn about it, build a collection, educate your palate, etc.
