I have very much enjoyed what I've read of her so far. I like getting to see someone talk about their translation process. But I also hate the inevitable backlash about "wokeness" because she dated call Odysseus "complicated" and happens to be a woman.
Me too—I still like fitzgerald, but her translation is also very good. What? I don't understand. Why would somebody be castigated as 'woke' for being female and calling a mythological figure...

What? I don't understand. Why would somebody be castigated as 'woke' for being female and calling a mythological figure complicated? Is the conceit that odysseus is (supposed to be) a straightforward manly-man? Who could possibly come away with that impression?
It's more complicated than the single translation in the opening about our twisty main character but the gist seems to be because she's a woman and she modernized some and shared her reasons for...

She is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and criticized some previous translations for inserting sexist opinions in their translation choices. Oh and did I mention she's a woman?
Also Twitter is a cesspool but she absolutely was getting ripped into by the blue checks over the Iliad, despite clear and rational replies. So honestly, mostly misogyny and confusing their dislike of a translation choice with an epic take down of her character.
I'm a bit of a book snob, but I think it's a great idea to convert such an iconic story from hexameter to iambic pentameter for modern audiences (and casual reading). This has made me interested...

This has made me interested in re-reading The Odyssey and The Iliad in this new format and made it accessible to me as a pleasure read instead of something I expect to slog through.
To Wilson's point, this whole thing raises the question of "why not?" When translating a story from one language to another, why not also convert it into a metering that is accessible to that same language? It's not meant to be exclusive to scholarly reading, so let's make it approachable.
