The title really doesn't do this one justice - as tends to be the case for newer Defunctland videos, to be honest! It's long, very in depth, and covers a whole lot of historical ground to give the concept of automata context in culture and in engineering before even touching on Disney's approach (which it also covers extensively).

It's also apparently "part 1", which made me laugh given the length. I wouldn't let that put you off, it totally works as a standalone piece, but if there were ever a doubt that the channel had finished its transition to long form documentaries I think that should put it to rest.

Nice to see this appear on Tildes. Disney YouTube has been a guilty pleasure of mine for years, and Defunctland is the absolute cream of the crop. Especially the most recent handful of videos have really pushed the quality level to new highs. This one is great and fascinating, I loved the deep dive into exactly how the animatronics function (Kevin does a great job explaining it in lay language) and that ‘60s era mo-cap suit is absolutely insane. This vid is loaded with some hilarious dry humor as well, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

Also: Am I crazy or is this the year of Robert Moses? Defunctland was the last place I expected him to pop up, but it seems like the guy has made an appearance in every podcast I listen to or YouTube channel I watch in 2024, so it was only a matter of time.

Ever wanted to refer someone to something but it's technically a spoiler? Totally related, do you watch Dropout?

lol I do watch Dropout. Mostly Game Changer and Make Some Noise. My spouse is into the broader oeuvre including D20. It was actually the podcast 99% Invisible that introduced me to Robert Moses with their “book club” series reading The Power Broker. It was a weird worlds-colliding moment for me when the special guest for one episode was none other than Brennan Lee Mulligan!

Let me just say Dimension 20 has a Robert Moses reference. Spoilers like that don't bug me, but some folks feel different so I'll keep it broad! It's unsurprising to me that Brennan had feelings...

Ah ok I'll have to add that to my listen list. I can't keep up with shows like 99PI so I dip in and out
