It just wasn't cute. Nobody wants a not cute rat. ( The racism around the presidency wasnt cute either. ) Pouch full of baby opossums sounds like it could have worked, but maybe it was too far ahead of its time, given that teddy bears were still bleeding edge toy technology.

Yeah, the opposum doesn't look fierce nor cuddly. Even today, it's difficult to find a stuffed opposum that's cute.
