"Catholic bishops are employing the same deception from coast to coast," he said. "Cover up child sex offenses while maintaining the ministry of the abusers. Next, oppose any modifications to the statute of limitations that might make those offenses more visible. Finally, go to federal bankruptcy courts and act as though you have run out of money when secular laws offer a window to justice. When will church officials make true amends?"

I'll never be able to understand how they can square this kind of behavior with the morals and lessons their teachings espouse. Also, should an institution that doesn't pay taxes even be able to leverage bankruptcy laws?

Why would they need to do that? Do you think that they will lose any followers by doing this? They can just go "oh woe is me, the current world is so hostile to the good word" and make themselves...

You are giving the church leaders far too much credit here by even considering that they want to practice what they preach. The entire reason that this is an issue in the first place is because the church leadership actively refuses to be good people.

Oh, I hear you. Honestly, as terrible as this whole situation is, as well as all of the terrible things done to children by the church over the years, it's only a drop in the ocean compared to the unimaginably brutal history of murders, genocide, torture, etc., that this and practically ever other major religion has committed over their lifetimes.
It just boggles my mind that in this day and age, where information is everywhere, it can be done so openly and hypocritically. Granted, misinformation is also everywhere, and diehards are going to be diehards, but that doesn't make it any less disappointing or hard to wrap your head around.

So i guess my question is, why should this matter? I’m not sure how the Catholic church is organized as a legal entity(s), but if a higher organization exerts control/receives benefit, it should be able to be brought in as a defendant. There are also means to claw back wealth that was transferred out of an organization under a number of circumstances.
