I'd be interested in seeing more of this, personally! Just now saw the thread. :)

I only found the thread this morning. I find Tildes threads can take up to a day to gain attention and get people participating and commenting, at least in my limited experience so far.

I really like the idea of this and am keen to take part, but it seems to be closed already, ~52 hours after the original post was made. I should be more on the ball.

That completion rate is disappointing, although I'm now curious as to what the median completion rate for web surveys is in general (I'm guessing ~10%, but maybe I'm being too cynical). And as for the sample size, I don't know how to address that, but I'm willing to look into it if you'd like, because I love these kinds of things too, and I wonder such random things quite often.

It would've been great if (or, will still be great when) this survey reached more people more committed to providing complete data. I hope you don't give up on it. If there's some magic formula for exposure and QC hiding out there somewhere, it's just a case of tracking it down and implementing it to get more of that sweet, sweet data!

Some of this also felt a bit US-centric. I live in a city were pretty much everyone is bilingual to some extent, which makes me feel pretttty confident that speaking multiple languages has nothing to do with intelligence. And learning a second language in school is already mandatory (how well it's taught is another story), which made answering the question about it a bit odd. I think it's necessary for kids to learn a second language, but that we'd suffer if the second language people learned was freely chosen instead of English/French.

Indeed, it's not specific to the US, but there are only a handful of anglophone countries where kids aren't expected to learn a second language in school and where speaking more than one language isn't the norm. I suppose those are the places where most Tildes users are from though!

I think we'd suffer from free choice of a second (not third) language because functional bilingualism is pretty crucial here. Lots of jobs require you to speak both English and French, especially in the service industry. If you're anglophone, then not knowing how to speak French makes life way more difficult. If you're francophone, not speaking English probably won't be as disadvantageous, but English is probably the most useful second language for the same reasons it is for non-English speakers around the world, perhaps even more so given we're surrounded by English-speaking areas.
