My first thought, knowing a little about how other cultures view the "third gender," as I've seen it described in older cultures, was "How fringe is this group?" It seems to be accepted fully by the dominant Hindu group, obviously due to Hindu's connections to the order or third-gendered people.
I'm also using the term because it is, generally, not nearly as cut and dry as "trans" or even the more difficult-to-quantify "gender fluid." It was cool, though, to se the re-establishment of this order is being accepted on its spiritual merits.
