I think his style (at least for this video) is a mix of actual education, wacky commentary and especially wacky visuals, and since usually he makes songs, not educational videos, it ends up being more meme/ytp-y (or according to you, cheesy) than educational. Really he just hit the algorithm with a video that doesn't really represent the majority of what he does and doesn't really fit in with it and got crowned 'best in weird', which represents his content far better than 'cheesy' and doesn't really work when talking about history.
While I'm gonna watch it, still was slightly disappointed it wasn't the best "History of Japan" video on Youtube
