The story of John Titor is one of my favorite Internet legends. In times of civil unrest I often think back to Titor's predictions. Anyone else familiar?

On the contrary, I think there are way more internet mysteries now than ever, and they are far more elaborate. At any given time, there's thousands of ARGs, cryptic websites, collaborative fiction projects, fictional conspiracies, mixed media series that maintain a suspension of disbelief, podcasts, etc. It's gotten to the point where it's really hard to stand out in the crowd. At times it seems like you need advanced cryptography and a mixed-media trail that spans dozens of websites to catch anyone's attention. Some are super complex, like Cicada 3301.

This saturation makes it harder for any one thing to become iconic. But if you're interested in internet mysteries, all you have to do is search and you'll find dozens of forums, youtube channels, etc. that cover these sorts of things. It's become such a common thing for people to create deliberately mysterious and cryptic things on the internet that it's harder, now, to suspend disbelief and really get into it. Everyone just rolls their eyes and thinks "oh, yet another Alternate Reality Game." Some dude posing as a time traveler on a web forum kind of lost the novelty factor.

Ong's Hat is pretty fun, too, and was a good demonstration of how ideas spread from innocuous, false origins to some people's reality.
