I'm way too dumb to understand the math in it, but I spotted that last night when I was trying to figure out the origin of this story. The closest I came was this research paper mentioning the story being in Swami Satchidanandendra Sarasvati's (1880-1975) trilogy of Advaita Vedānta philosophy books, but there are some references to much older Swami's telling a similar story, just nothing concrete (that I could find in English, anyways).
Well, yes, but it’s fun to figure out how it “works.” I prefer to believe that the king and his minister came up with the joke together.
