This troubles me in a way I probably can't articulate very well. I'm not very familiar with this sort of research, but from what I understand "intelligence" is a very difficult thing to define and study. While this involves tests that look as specific cognitive abilities (like working memory), they inevitably get conflated with intelligence. (The research was published in a journal called "Intelligence," after all.)
