I'm of two minds about this article. On one hand, it's good that the Mormon cult is getting more coverage of its hateful ideology. On the other, I really dislike the whole a billionaire did it, so now it's real/newsworthy angle you see in a lot of press, and the amount is tiny relatively and is billionaire "philanthropy". Man with ~$84 *gives 1 cent to charity.
*Except they'll probably get some or all of it back in tax deductions, so it's more like the US populace just gave money to charity, except some random guy gets to decide where and gets all the credit.
I think it's incredibly important to frame it in terms of how much money this person has, because people should realize that it's equivalent to most people donating a fraction of a cent but it is...

but it is also important to recognize that many billionaires are also not philanthropists and do not regularly give money away so we should celebrate the fact that they have managed to clear the fantastically low bar of human decency, kindness, and compassion that their peers have set somewhere near the center of the earth.

I understand the cynicism, since I personally don't believe that anyone should even be allowed to accumulate that much money in the first place. But worth noting, from the article:
In addition to potentially making more donations to Equality Utah, Green — whose net worth is estimated at $5 billion — wrote in a giving pledge that his goal is to give away more than 90 percent of his wealth "through data-driven philanthropy before or at my death."
I wouldn't have posted this if it was just your standard "uber-rich person gives pittance to charity for the sake of PR and tax deductions" type story.
Yeah, Bill Gates, that super "generous" guy promised the same thing, yet somehow, with all that charity, his net worth keeps going up. It's a pretty common story among billionaire philanthropists....

Frankly, I think the most likely thing to happen is that Green will give every year, but not so much that he can't make most or all of it back in tax deductions/good publicity/shady shenanigans.
Again, I totally understand the cynicism and frustration with the absurd levels of wealth inequality. But IMO his net worth still going up doesn't negate his relative generosity, as compared to...
Again, I totally understand the cynicism and frustration with the absurd levels of wealth inequality. But IMO his net worth still going up doesn't negate his relative generosity, as compared to most other billionaires anyways, nor does it undermine all the good he and his ex-wife have already done through their foundation either. However, I don't have the energy for a lengthy debate about this subject, nor any desire to defend a person who I genuinely don't care about (and in many ways despise due to his actions while running MS). And as I said before, I also genuinely don't believe that he should have ever been allowed to accumulate that much money to begin with... so this is where I bow out.
Have a good one! (I mean that sincerely, BTW) Happy holidays! :)
