I love subnormality comics (sorry, comix); they really scratch the itch of "i want to read a comic and novel at the same time about some real weird and deep shit"

So I usually have to spend a bunch of time going down philosophical rabbit holes before I can fully understand and appreciate the comix. But even so, I still enjoy it for that reason... and also the reasons you listed too. :)

For discussion, what are some good questions to ask to get to know someone? Nixed the other questions (in this reality) either because I'm bad at phrasing or because I know friends don't let friends do Parfit.

Sometimes I mention the five molemen bosses from Earthbound who each boast about being the 3/5th best mole to start a conversation on contentment or moderation.

There's something a little sad about someone who would feel they're lacking because in some uncountable possible other universes they're better off, with one best off. Or stifling, to think that that sort of comparison is even possible in the face of people who find happiness or fulfillment in very different ways.

Being unable to think of something better or not having an inclination to "dwell in moments between good things both remembered and imagined" isn't a great place to be, either.

It did a good job showing that tension.

A while back I found some research paper on the subject of generating a sense of closeness with someone else. It essentially came down to taking turns asking and answering questions from a list of increasingly personal nature. I can't find the paper now but a quick googling came up with this pdf. I've not yet tried it out but I find it fascinating that there is some actual research in this area. I think this is at least a nice way to get to know someone, but perhaps it becomes less good the more widespread it becomes.

The comic straight up says this.

Regretfully I even allowed myself to stalkerishly search her name online once at 4am, away from the eyes of the world, but there was nothing other than the suspicion that her last name was a reference to a Jorge Luis Borges story about something that's hard to forget. Well played...

Right you are, I should pay more attention when reading. I was thinking the golden portals were a nod and missed the direct reference.
