Even more notable than the abandoned buildings, though, is the quality of the writing itself. Two miss-spelled/misused words in the first two paragraphs, and a story based on a genuinely fascinating idea that ultimately led nowhere...

Contrast this with the Architectural Digest of my youth, which featured long, discursive, erudite articles and photographs of houses that were absolutely jaw dropping, at least for this kid growing up in the boonies. I used to buy second hand copies with my pocketmoney, because they were as far from my everyday life as any science fiction (another great love) was. At least it doesn't seem to have lost the knack for identifying the extraordinary!
