I haven't gotten all the way through yet, but this caught my eye.

But, in many cases, employers may not even be aware of how unintended biases influence who they hire.

This concept has always fascinated me. Not just when it comes to unintentional bias, but perception as a whole. People have these skewed perceptions based on no real information, but that isn't obvious to them. They don't stop and ask themselves, Wait why am I looking at it like this - what evidence do I have? People literally have these pre conceptions built up in their mind with no foundation for that opinion, belief, view point, etc. How people can do that just boggles me.

And another aspect of this is, people can totally see the big picture in one situation, but then they can't in another situation that is basically identical.

This isn't the best example, but I always think back to an interaction I had in the military. I had this person who was in the duty section I ran. She wanted to trade duty days with another person from a different section. She was a good worker so I pushed for the trade for her. All she had to do was go and talk to a first class and sign a piece of paper.

I go to relieve her from watch for the 5 minutes it will take to talk to hi mand sign, but she just keeps asking me questions. Just relentless questions like what does he want, what do I need to do, etc. Just asking me questions for 5 minutes and at this point it could have all been done and her questions answered by going to the office and seeing him. And at that point my tone had changed to an annoyed one.

Then later that evening she told me I was "being real mean" earlier. And I know for a fact, if the situation was reversed and I had asked her more than a single question, she would have gotten annoyed and just walked off. And that just fascinated me for several reasons. I was totally doing something nice for her, I was willing to relieve her from watch to finalize it. I am doin all of these nice things and helping her get her day switched, but in her mind I was being mean. And this was a situation where if the roles were reversed, she'd have gotten even more annoyed than I did. It just fascinates me what people see and don't see. It would be totally understandable if she had gotten annoyted, but me getting annoyed was such a foreign concept.

Of course this is a less extreme example. THe fact that people don't stop and think into why they have a perception is a really interesting topic to me.

It's like when I was in high school I knew this guy. He was real smart, but had a bad home life. He worked and paid a lot of the bills so he had this grown up mind set. People labeled him as weird because of the things he based his decisions / actions on. We all grow up and people finally look at things how this guy looked at them. You'd think they'd finally understand he wasn't weird at all. Nope. They still associate this guy with being weird. Despite the fact they see eye to eye and understand completely why he was making his decisions. And it is because they don't connect the dots. They don't think enough into to realize he just saw these things a lot sooner than they did. They call him weird and turn around and do just what he would have and don't stop and think, Wait a minute...
