Wow, I'm glad you posted this, OP. I have wondered who this kid is and what the bizarre/creepy obsession is about. I live and work in China and see his face everywhere on WeChat. There is a sticker (gif sharing) group I belong to that is made up of foreigners and Chinese that posts hundreds of gifs of this kid every week. Most of the time, he isn't really doing anything. One of my Chinese colleagues almost exclusively responds to my texts with his gifs.

For some reason, internet fame is something I still can't wrap my head around. Maybe it has to do with a younger audience being the driving force behind who gets chosen, and I'm just some out of touch asshole at just 29. But to me, the most popular personalities and influencers are, more often than not, talentless hacks or memefied stars like this kid whose celebrity is equal parts irony, harassment, and stupidity. In the aforementioned sticker group, there is always some clueless newcomer who questions or objects to the Gavin gif dumps and that person is always met with the same empty response: 'It's the meme kid. Look at his face. People like him.'
