Felons losing rights doesn't sit well with me and I agree that needs addressed. But the argument that criminals shouldn't lose rights because there are people who get away with crimes and don't lose rights is a bad one. By that logic we shouldn't punish anyone in any way, because there will always be people getting away with stuff that don't get punished. Felons' rights should be determined by what's right for felons, independent of how those who aren't convicted are treated.

I think it is right to allow previously incarcerated people the right to vote. If you set someone free and they’ve paid their debt, they shouldn’t continue to be punished. I know this probably doesn’t square as well with gun rights and the sex offender registry, but I think voting is especially important in this context. Imagine the selection bias just in issues like funding for public defenders, prison reform, election of super ‘tough on crime” judges and DAs where we are missing the opinions of nearly everyone who experienced it first hand!
