The author’s US based, with a wife and child there, although she’s from the UK originally and writing for a British paper - I’m guessing “us” in this context is people who live in America. I remember looking it up specifically when I saw something else she’d written, because I thought the same, whatever the column was seemed quite US centric for a UK paper but it didn’t mention that bit of context anywhere.

I would also say- US conservatives can/would/will export these views elsewhere as much as is possible. So saying it's what they want "for us", meaning everyone, still could be seen as true

I think the Guardian has a sizable audience in the US. I actually really like their coverage of US politics.
