What's the current status of turkey? Will they ratify them or was the Quran burning just in time to serve as an excuse to delay it even more? Will Erdoğan still ask for his political opponents to get extradited or will he just agree with Sweden joining because the elections are over and he doesn't need to play hard with his rather impossible demands?
I would bet that erdogan is going to keep using Sweden as a cheap way to score domestic political points or to bargain for F35 or some such thing.
I dont see him changing the course anytime soon. Sadly.
But I dont think Sweden has a similar need to get into NATO as Finland did. If Sweden is attacked, the shit will have already hit the fan elsewhere, I cant imagine a situation where only Sweden is attacked. So in that regard they are fine and safe.
Yeah, as a swede, and also a Gotlander, I am not worried about being attacked in the near future. Since applying for NATO membership, both the UK and USA have made defence pacts with us until we join. But with Finlands entry, Russia can't attack us, as they would have to cross Finland in one way or another. Considering the failure they had with invading a neighbouring country, over land... Can't say I'm terribly worried about an invasion by sea either. If Russia attacks us, everything, everywhere, has already gone to shit and NATO membership would be useless in that scenario.
And you're in the barely known defensive alliance called EU with most of the rest of us. The Baltic is lake NATO for the foreseeable future, and Kaliningrad looks more like a liability than an asset these days.
Here be musings about the capability of NATO to suppress the Russian navy in the Baltic without swedish help. The subs certainly help, but seem hardly essential to me. Basing and shoreline control seem equally important. With Sweden, >90% of the coastline is allied, and the rest is within range for NATO to suppress port facilities I think.
I mean if sweden is attacked and the government of Finland does nothing, I’m sure you’ll still end up with a crapload of Finn’s coming over to shoot some Russians .
