My story is pretty much the same as yours, except for the university part. I was a avid reader in my young days but that stopped when I also got depressed etc.

I actually picked up reading when I was in a mental hospital lol. At first it felt like chore, like you said, but I just kept the book in my hands, wondered around, read a few lines or chapters here and there. At first it was a slow slog but as I kept at it the easier it got.

I was(/am) very interested in history so I started reading about topics that interested me anyway. At first I read a few general history books, then I started to go into specific topics, the Great War, the Mongol conquests etc. I only read history books for like 8 years until I decided to re-read Lord of the Rings. Since that went well I picked up the small and short Wheel of Time-series. Now I'm on a Star Wars binge.

I've heard many say that reading is like doing a workout. When you start, everything feels heavy and annoying but the more you do it the easier it gets. So I would recommend to get a book that you feel you want to read and then keep the book at hand. Don't start doing any stupid reading challenges, like my cousin who decided to read 52 books in a year. For him that works because he's been reading A LOT for decades. If I put that sort of pressure on myself I would not read at all. Don't force yourself to read, read a little bit here and there, take pauses when you feel like its getting too difficult. Theres no hurry.

Edit: like the other guy said: Audiobooks.

Not sure what the EU should consider doing, and what mechanisms it has to deal with it's issues.

I would just like to point out that the EU is not like the US. The EU is not a federal authority in the same way Washington DC is. The EU is still a jumble of actual, individual and sovereign countries who have decided to play as a team, for now. I know it makes it easier to compare the two if you put them on a equal standing but I don't think that gives a accurate picture of the situation.

And I'm not writing this to say "this is fine we are doing fine." We have problems and we need to deal with them, but GDP numbers are not a worry for me.

Yeah I didn't mean that at all. I was just curious of how a AI driver would fare in conditions that change suddenly, for example coming across black ice in the middle of a corner.

The notion of a driving test is not that useful for AVs. (Not that the parent was necessarily promoting that they are, I am just offering information about a common misconception.)

You should get new tires every 3-5 years, even if they are not completely worn down. The tires will start to degrade on their own, first they get very hard and lose grip and then they start to crumble into pieces. So even if you have a older car, I would certainly hope that you have new tires on it.

I dont think the width of the cars is to blame. Its just that Monza is a power circuit and the best places to overtake are obviously the braking zones, in Monza there are not many big braking zones. The first corner being the best place, the second chicane is another one but without a DRS assisted straight before it, the third best might be into Ascari but because its a fast corner its very hard to do a overtake into that one. The first Lesmo might be one if it had a longer straight before it.

(e.g. comparing nationwide human driving statistics to fair weather AV driving statistics)

I've been thinking about the weather issue.. I live way up in the north and during the winter the grip conditions vary A LOT. Like, you can enter a corner with decent amount of grip but in the middle of the corner the grip might just disappear. I wonder what the AI driver might do in that sort of situation. Slamming on the brakes often is the worst thing you can do in that situation, are the AI drivers taught to drift?

To get a drivers license in my country you need to go trough a skid pad training thing where there are different scenarios, a moose avoidance test, braking test, braking in a corner test etc.. Would be interesting to see a AI driver to the same skid pad course and see how it gets on.

I have a few examples from my own experience, once I was going from one highway to another but the connecting ramp had a small bridge portion, the bridge area was basically just black ice (because it freezes faster than a area that has ground under it). I entered the bend with the normal amount of grip, as soon as I lifted off from the accelerator I got lift off oversteer and I had to use all of my forza motorsport skills to keep the car from hitting the barriers, I was lightly on the brakes and counter steering one way, then another. I was very close to completely spinning at least twice.

Another one was when I was in a similar situation, I was about to join a highway on a two lane ramp. In front of me was a old van with a trailer going very slowly. I decided (a bit stupidly) to overtake it on the ramp. When I got next to it I started to understeer, I lifted off and turned a bit harder which of course made the car oversteer. I managed to hold the drift with counter steering and little bit of accelerator, I was lucky enough to keep it on my lane and nothing bad happened.

I've been thinking what would a AI driver have done in those situations. In the first example the cars stability control system was sort of helping and making things worse for me, I feel like I reacted faster than the system, which made things a bit worse in a few spots because my correction coupled with the stability controls corrections equaled a over correction. I remember yelling at the car "STOP DOING THAT" while trying to regain control. In the second example I didn't have any electronics helping me (that particular car only had ABS) and I managed to keep everything smooth and no big dramas. From that experience I would personally like to drive a car with minimal electronic "helps" but I do realise not everyone is spending their free time driving racing simulators.

I use a lot of those soy things, apparently they are called "textured vegan protein" or something, done right they are almost like slices of chicken. Apart from those, theres a local company that makes "nyhtökaura" which is a mix of fava bean, pea and oat protein. Theres also "vegejauhis" (minced vege, kind of like minced meat) which is made of a mix of mushroom, wheat and other stuffs.

I agree we need to build stupid amounts of renewables but at the same time we need to make sure the grid is balanced and that in 20 years when the older nuclear stations start to be at the end of their lives, we need to (probably) replace them. Building a nuclear plant takes a loooong time (check out Olkiluoto and its many issues), so IMO we should be building some all the time. Not in an effort to replace everything else with nuclear but to make sure we are not caught with our pants down when we realise we need new ones in a few years. I'd rather we spent a decade building one plant properly than do it in 2 years in a hurry.

I would go as far as to say that they havent done any research on the matter if they think they are ticking time bombs. But whatever the case is, this is going to hurt them in the long run. I know that during the early days they got a lot of support because of their misunderstandings/lies but now that information is more freely available its easier to find out the truth.

When I was a early teenager, I was the treehugging hippie of my friend group. One of my friends suggested that I should join greenpeace and start volunteering with them. I thought it was a good idea and started to research things, in the end I decided that greenpeace has done more bad than good with their nuclear power stance and I wont be joining or volunteering with them. My friend was very surprised about this because she also thought that nuclear power is bad and evil etc. Luckily she wasn't the kind of person to die on stupid hills and I managed to persuade her to pro-nuclear stance with my (very limited) knowledge of the issue.

Whenever nuclear power is a topic, I like to tell an anecdote, I have told it here on Tildes previously.. My dad worked in the local power station, he told me this story. The station uses peat as a power source. After a few decades of usage, they rebuilt the burning furnaces and sold the scarp metal to russia. On the border crossing the russian customs officials said that it had too much nuclear radiation to go over the border. So they solved the issue by taking the scarp metal to a landfill area, left it out for a summer. The rain washed away most of the radiation and they could take it over to russia. After hearing this story I did some research, apparently nuclear power plants have the least amount of radiation leaking to the outside because they have such rigorous limits for leaks etc. Burning peat and coal dont have that. Peat has a lot of natural radiation, when you dump tons and tons of it to one place and burn it, the radiation that is normally spread over vast areas in the nature, accumulate into that one place and are happily flying out of the chimneys.

In Finland we have Autiotupa (Wilderness hut, https://autiotuvat.com/). "Autio" means empty, which they are. Theres (usually) no food, maybe some firewood. But there are bunk beds and stove. The huts are made from logs, they are not locked and they are free to use by anyone. Many hermits have lived in them.

Anyways... There are hiking routes that go trough Finland, Sweden and Norway. So if anyone wants to do a longer hiking trip, one can go to all three countries without any hassle.
