That was a pretty good race. The Ferrari boys definitely entertained today!

Sainz and Leclerc fighting all the way to the end had me sitting on the edge of my seat. And it was starting get pretty sloppy on the braking at times. I'd say it's a miracle that one or both of them didn't crash out, but it's really just driver skill. Having watched the chaos of the F2 feature race this morning, it's clearly driver skill. Props to Ferrari today, even if they were unable to bring it home.
We have two weeks til Singapore.
If you're looking for more racing, Indycar races today in Portland, and then their final race of the season - Grand Prix of Monterrey - is next weekend. And Laguna Seca is pretty awesome.
If Ferrari were my team, I'd probably feel the same. But since they're not, it was just pure entertainment. Dangerous "omg what are they doing, are they crazy?" entertainment, but entertainment nonetheless.
Really was something to watch, Leclerc really pushing it with that last lap attempt. Also, Albon was on fire today, great stuff.
The Indycar race was exciting as well, very interesting pit stop with the tire falling off.
Sainz was a fucking machine today. Absolutely did the best he could with the car, a deserved podium and DoTD. I don't know if I've seen a better drive from him.
Hamilton really got away with that Piastri mistake... but as usual, showed great maturity during and after the race, admitting it was his fault.
Oh yeah Max was in this race wasn't he.
Tsunoda's early (early is still an understatement) retirement is something that I'd like to get more info on. The Honda engine has been working wonderfully for Red Bull all season long, but Tsunoda claimed he heard "cracking" sounds from the engine, and attributed the fault to an engine failure, but it's still a tad early to come to conclusions.
Alpha Tauri (in Zandvoort as well) has shown an awful lack of organisation this season. The car itself is underperforming, but they threw away points positions (either due to unreliability or strategy mistakes) more often than not. Yuki was poised to deliver some good points this weekend, given how close he was to the points in the starting grid, but it was all for nothing in the end.
Beautiful racing today, great race. At the end, I was laying in my bed watching the race on my laptop, which was on my belly. When Leclerc locked up into turn 1, I legit almost dropped the poor computer on the floor! It was intense, exciting and pure F1. Loved it all. Williams keeps pissing me off with the "okay albono, we've pitted you early now please survive on these tyres for 50 laps". By the way, Ocon retired! I hadn't even noticed until I saw it on Twitter a few minutes ago. Also, poor Yuki :(
And @jcphoenix, great work getting these threads up every weekend. getting the result tables in was a great idea too
This is only my first weekend doing it! I did post for one of the Formula E races though. I'll try my best to put these up every F1 race weekend at least for the rest of the season. I definitely miss the race discussion posts that were on reddit. I know we've tried some F1 session or even race weekend "live" threads here, but we just don't have enough people (yet) to make it worthwhile.
Either way, happy to serve!
What happened to Aston Martin? They've been my favourite team to watch this year and it feels like they've fell out of relevance. Stroll has had a pretty poor season and generally it feels like the car can't keep up.
Ditto all your points. At first I thought I had nothing to add, but I think I would also note that ALO is a bit of a phenom dragging the car forwards. Even last race in the Dutch GP, keeping that team propped up, man!
Maybe it's just me but this track felt way too narrow for these modern formula 1 cars. Makes sense given that it's a century-old track and the cars back then were just way narrower. Pretty much all of the overtakes today took place either on the main straight drs zone or immediately after it on turn 3. Makes it less exciting in my opinion. Easier for the tv crew to follow since all of the action is happening in the span of like 4 corners (turn 11, then the main straight, then turns 1,2, and 3). But it's worse for the viewers since if a driver didn't make his move by the end of the drs zone or turn 3, welp might as well wait a minute for them to come back around and try it in the exact same spot.
Seems to be a common problem with some of these historic tracks - e.g. Monaco. Still a fun race, but something really should be done about the lack of overtakes on these narrow tracks.
I dont think the width of the cars is to blame. Its just that Monza is a power circuit and the best places to overtake are obviously the braking zones, in Monza there are not many big braking zones. The first corner being the best place, the second chicane is another one but without a DRS assisted straight before it, the third best might be into Ascari but because its a fast corner its very hard to do a overtake into that one. The first Lesmo might be one if it had a longer straight before it.
