Bro, low-key this is pretty fucking wild. I get how it happens, it's just really interesting how a country can whiplash so far from persecuting a cultural group, that they'll go as far to defend said cultural group when they persecute in almost the same way.

I feel like Germany is in a weird position on this. Like the correct answer is to stand up to an apartheid government. But I totally understand why it's difficult for them not to.

In my uneducated opinion, they're failing themselves again, and are once again being complicit to a genocidal leader.

It's worth noting that Germany isn't just not criticizing Israel and it's not just the media attacking critics of Israel -- one German state has already started requiring those applying for citizenship to affirm Israel's right to exist. It's gone incredibly far beyond what could be considered understandable caution surrounding an issue with some obvious historical baggage.

It's sad seeing another country follow in almost the precise footsteps: Breed resentment in region (intentionally or not) over decades, fund terrorists and despots for political gains, be utterly shocked when said funding backfires. Unify nationalism via collective trauma, then leverage that nationalism surge to justify any and all actions.

Dude, I fucking wrote "death to terrorists" in my 4th grade journal. What the fuck man?

My gut feel is that it is less about their collective shame, and more about them having switched from antisemitism to islamophobia after 9/11. "Defending Israel" is an awfully legit dog whistle.

their collective shame seems to block objective reasoning.

Yea we're in a really, really weird space right now where you can't implicitly trust anybody saying "Defend Israel" or "Defend Palestine." Both are dog whistles by different, but aligned,...

Both of those statements need to come from a position of proper context and trust to be explored in good faith.
