I know most people are talking about the big picture when it comes to illegal immigration but I can't imagine being any of these people taking these incredibly huge risks to come to where I was...

Many, like the Venezuelan sisters Ana and Cáterin, are desperate enough to take the huge risks of crossing the Darién in the hope of a better life in the US. “We had nothing in Venezuela anyway,” Ana explained. “We would rather die on the way than die of hunger in Venezuela.”

I know most people are talking about the big picture when it comes to illegal immigration but I can't imagine being any of these people taking these incredibly huge risks to come to where I was lucky enough to be born.

This method hasn't worked for me on this article this time around. I see the page for a split second before FT cover my screen in a wall of their delightful shade of pink... 🙃

Ah weird. It worked for me. But that's a shame, since it's an interesting (albeit depressing) article.

May I ask if you tried clearing your cookies? I'd imagine they're keeping track of whether you've visited the page.

I haven't. But I'm not that fussed, as I don't read the Financial Times. It's mainly for the tagging.

It gets even worse than just what's in this article. On the US-Mexico border, we heavily patrol the areas around cities, but have big gaps in unpopulated stretches of desert that are less surveilled. Migrants are often forced to cross in inhospitable deserts and die.
