Gilbert Gottfried was an odd duck. His comedy shouldn't have worked... his voice was both grating and whiny, his jokes didn't always have punchlines, and he wasn't always the friendliest guy onstage. And yet, at the end of the day, he was both welcoming and hilarious against all odds. He was off-putting and comforting. It was like mixing foam rubber and Elmer's glue and getting tapioca pudding. You can check the steps all you want, but those ingredients should not have produced that result. And yet, there he was.

That's it, I'm not rediscovering old comedians and watching all their clips on YouTube and growing fond of them anymore. From now on I'll focus on the safer ones, like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and now Gottfried. I'm starting to feel like the grim reaper. I gotta stop watching Conan ASAP.
Also, if you hate the dude, just say it. I'm generally quite respectful of mourning etiquette, but I cannot think of anything less respectful towards a guy like Gottfried than to actually respect him. Dude joked about 9/11 two weeks after the thing. On stage, on video. That's not what he was about.
He was funny on the Norm McDonald show. A show I didn't think was funny at all until I watched the jokes compilation video again the next day and suddenly appreciated Norm's delivery a lot more.

I'm gonna miss the hell out of him.

you might like Norm's biography. The audiobook is read by him and its probably one of the best biographies I've ever experienced.
