The article is behind a paywall. But I’ll give a quick explainer. Peter Rice was the head of TV development (I think) at Disney. He was a Fox executive. He’s very well liked in the industry, he has great relationships with talent, seemingly he’s a pretty nice guy. And because Chapek has been fucking up a lot, and because the board at Disney has not renewed his contract which expires on February 2023, people have been talking about Rice as a potential replacement. Chapek has been making a lot of enemies with Hollywood talent as he has no interest in the industry (he was in charge of Parks), and who better to replace him than the guy that Hollywood loves.
So then Chapek fired him. This after recently re-upping Rice’s contract for three years. What a way to treat the guy who made Searchlight into the powerhouse it is today.
Chapek never made sense as a Disney CEO. Disney is primarily a film studio. Iger was well liked in the industry, he liked keeping talent happy. And Chapek does not care about any of that. This is on top of the disastrous Don’t Say Gay response that Chapek had.
Anyways, it’s an interesting article. Feels like it came out of an episode of Succession.
