It'll be interesting to see him try something slightly new. While it isn't too far from his usual movies (i.e., it's still a melodrama), it seems that he's trying something more polished that seems like award bait. I'm all for directors (especially ones that have been typecast) trying new things. Sometimes it results in their best work. At least he's trying something new.
Some of his more recent films have looked very bad (visually, not quality-wise) and seemed like they were shot in a matter of days for as little money as possible.
