This is the first time I’ve seen a tie like this with LA.
LA is one of three critic groups known as the trifecta. They are the reason why Drive My Car is a Best Picture nominee.
I gotta say, despite EEAAO winning film (in a tie) it severely underperformed. Out of all the critic orgs this was supposed to be where EEAAO dominated.
It didn’t place in Screenplay, Director, or Editing all of which were expected. And Yeoh got runner-up in Lead Performance instead of an outright win.
So I think this is a real stop in any momentum EEAAO had in winning Picture at the Oscar’s. If it couldn’t win here… hard to see it winning in a more hostile environment.
Similarly Power of the Dog underperformed with these critic groups which is what led me to think that it wouldn’t win Picture at the Oscar’s. But I think EEAAO underperformed even more than that. To the point where I think it’s likeliest Oscar win (Original Screenplay) probably ends up going to Martin McDonagh for Banshees of Inisherin instead.
