These cuts come as WBD CEO David Zaslav recites what’s become his rosary: He wants Warner Bros. to be a studio for filmmakers. He wants to build bridges with directors who were burned by the previous regime under Jason Kilar, who responded to the pandemic with a unilateral move for day-and-date releases on HBO Max.

This line made me do a double take. I genuinely don't remember much controversy with Jason Kilar, but I heard plenty about David Zaslav's decisions after the Warner Brothers Discovery merger. Mainly about him cutting and removing numerous shows and projects from HBO Max (particularly animated content) with little to no warning (as in, the show runners found out their shows would be removed from the public announcement), as well as canceling Batgirl which was in the final stages of post-production. He's made a lot of decisions that have eroded filmmakers' trust in him, because they can't trust their projects will even see the light of day even when they're 90% complete.

And now he wants to gut TCM? That's just... What the heck is going through his mind??

In addition to what you've noted, it also seems clear that his goal is to increase Warner Discovery's bottom line. Prior to the merger, he was head of Discovery since 2006. He increased the profitability of DIscovery in his tenure by increasing low cost reality tv offerings (among other things). He is now among the highest paid entertainment executives in the business. I think that tells us all we need to know regarding where Warner Discovery content is heading.

It's not a trend. Its what's left to offer because reality tv is cheap to produce, cheap to film, and cheap to market. Zaslav showed who he was at his "commencement" speech at Boston University....

Zaslav showed who he was at his "commencement" speech at Boston University. AT&T had better sense about Warner than he did. He's gutting it to sell it to Paramount.

A24 is quickly becoming the last studio with any fortitude to stand up for creative projects, and its taking the Miramax model of flooding the market with horror schlock to keep it solvent.
