Alexander Payne made Election, the one with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon, which is my favorite comedy so I'm super excited for this. He gets the best performances out of Paul Giamatti, if anyone hasn't seen it do yourself a favor and watch Sideways.
Be warned though, this trailer kinda gives a lot away. I stopped at about 1 minute in and I got the premise.
The Descendants and Nebraska are also really great but I do think Sideways is his best
I've been wanting to finish up his filmography for awhile now, only really seen Sideways, Election, Paris Je T'Aime, and Downsizing (which wasn't the best, great cast aside). I think this term is overused, but Payne is one of the few directors I'd say is really under-appreciated.
Now he probably is. Critics really liked him during the Sideways time even up to Nebraska probably. He was a cool Director. Even if a lot of people say critics only fell in love with Sideways because they related with Giamattis characters.
Of course, the critic old guard has changed and someone like Payne won’t get praised like he did back in the early 00s. Critics now like other stuff.
This is a really weird trailer. It's starts out feeling like an 80s coming-of-age comedy, complete with "zany" music, and a stereotypical "movie" narrator voice (which I haven't heard used on a trailer in aaaaaages!)... but then quickly gets really emotional and deep after the "father's dead" line, and the music suddenly changes to folk.... then goes right back to comedy when the music completely changes yet again. WTF?
So yeah, really weird... but I actually really dig it. LOL. And I will also happily watch anything with Paul Giamatti in it anyways, so I didn't even need a trailer. :)
Comedy + Melancholy is Payne's MO.
Yeah, I saw your and Aliena's discussion above about Payne's other films... none of which I have seen, besides Sideways and Downsizing (both of which I enjoyed). So I will have to check the rest of them out now too! :)
