While I do love how they managed to subtly weave in references to the original games, watching the movie I felt like it was too subtle. The big moments of the movie were dominated by the same pop songs that have already been in various Marvel/kids movies. The actual game music was fun to catch when you did, but it felt hollow compared to the attention and prominence given to the pop song scenes. (I mean "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" just because they're in Brooklyn? Oof.) Overall the music was the biggest thing that brought me out of the movie.
The video was a bit too hectic for me to follow. Obviously he's trying to avoid copywrite strikes, but it really makes it difficult unless you pause his video and play the movie references yourself.

I just watched the movie so that I could finally play that video that's been sitting in my Watch Later for 4 months. Worth it! Was a great movie to listen to above all.

But overall it just felt pretty hollow to me. Like all the characters are just doing things because it's what they have to do to move the plot along. It's hard to describe.

I was a little disappointed Jump Up Super Star didn't make an appearance.
I did appreciate the rap from SMB Super Show at the beginning.
There's a whole portion of the score that they threw away to put the pop songs in, too. It's a real shame.
