The Creator
Oh man what a pretentious bore. JDW has always been the worst part of every movie he’s been in and he gives his worst performance here. So painfully awkward in many scenes. I was never not aware that he was delivering lines. The child actor playing the robot out acted him in every scene they had together, she was able to show more emotion and also seem more naturalistic than Washington. Hopefully this is the end of Hollywood trying to make this nepo baby a thing.
The movie itself is so fucking boring. It drags. Edwards is trying to be artsy by having those Malick like edits with the characters on the beach by it just doesn’t work. I also think it’s actually a visual downgrade from Rogue One.
This is like a worse version of Elysium from ten years ago in every respect.
Saw X
It’s actually good. I was surprised by how much I liked it. The only Saw films I’ve seen are The Final Chapter and Jigsaw but I am familiar with the storyline of the entire films and I’ve seen enough clips from the franchise to know what’s up.
From the way it’s shot to the way it’s edited it’s clear they were actually trying to make a good movie. Also, probably the best group of actors they cast for these films. In recent years horror films have gotten good actors, which was not the case 20 years ago when this franchise was prominent. The weakest performance comes from the legacy character from Saw II before they cared about hiring people who could act. The quality of acting is just night and day.
I finally got around to watching https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotlight_(film) and I thought it was fantastic.
Each actor gave a really solid performance and their personalities felt really fleshed out. It made me admire journalism in a way I hadn't really thought about before.
I have visited Boston, Providence, and Salem in the past and feel a connection to the state and the city, so seeing quite a few places in the film that I've walked around was quite surreal.
the four Wes Anderson films (film and three shorts) on Netflix are exceptional. Better than Asteroid City, in my mind.
I had a disappointing experience with The Handmaiden from 2016 a few days ago. I love Oldboy and this movie does similar things with subverting the narrative with twisting who is conning who, and we see events again from a different perspective. It just felt completely flat for me. Not that I could predict it, but it didn't have any "big reveal" feeling. Maybe I have become desensitized with how many movies go for big twists and it doesn't really have the same impact as it did when this story telling technique was less common. In addition to that, I did find the various sex scenes to be really off-putting. While I can't claim to have any knowledge of real lesbian sex, it definitely felt too heavily inspired from porn. It did have good moments though, but mostly from the young Hideko which was about the only scenes that had some emotional impact.
