Theres three main critic award groups (Critics Choice doesn’t count cause that’s made up of a lot of non-critics). NY, LA, and National Society of Film Critics (which is kind of an amalgamation of critics from both NY and LA).

All three are kind of distinct in their tastes, even if there is overlap with NSFC. So it’s actually a little surprising that LA went with Zone, it’s more of an NY choice. LA, being the only of the trifecta to award EEAAO last year, would usually go for something like Barbie or at the very least Poor Things. Stuff that’s campier/funnier and perhaps something that leans LGBT (like All Of Us Strangers for example).

Them going with Zone is going against type for LA.
