This makes Sean Baker the first American filmmaker to win the Palme since Terrence Malick won back in 2011 for The Tree of Life.
This also marks Neon's fifth Palme win in a row after having won the prize with Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, and Anatomy of a Fall. Although Titane, Triangle, and Anatomy were all acquired during the festival and Anora was backed by them from the beginning.
Seems to be the clear Cannes awards breakout and should be good to get into Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and Lead Actress at the Oscar's. Making it Baker's first true awards breakout (The Florida Project received a sole Supporting Actor nomination for Willem Dafoe).
This has been described as a pretty weak Cannes year but Anora was the best received film of the bunch, both critically and by the jury comprised of industry people.
