So, this just came to my attention and I thought it merited some discussion because of the circumstances. This could easily go into ~tech too, because this post is more about YouTube. We all know the YouTube copyright system is highly flawed and susceptible to abuse.

However, this time? The official RiffTrax YouTube channel got taken down due to erroneous copyright claims against a channel owned by Legend Films. Not against RiffTrax itself, but its former parent company.

    Quoting the relevant bit:

Our channel was terminated because a different channel belonging to our former parent company, Legend Films, was struck with several erroneous copyright claims and shut down. RiffTrax has been an independent company since 2017, and the RiffTrax YouTube channel had no active copyright complaints.

YouTube claims that if the Legend channel is reinstated, we will get access to ours back, but we have not been able to speak with anyone at YouTube directly.

Like I said, we know the YouTube copyright system is highly flawed, and also sucks at communicating with afflicted channels. However, the fact that it impacted a channel not directly connected to the afflicted channel is just... Something else. I'm sure it's not the first time, but it's new to me.

Hopefully the public scrutiny will get someone at YouTube to reverse this, and also disentangle the channels. In the meantime, the BlueSky post mentions other sources for RiffTrax content.
