This had kind of a turbulent pre-production. Originally Leigh Wahnnell was supposed to direct this and then something came up so then Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, Place Beyond the Pines) was supposed to direct Wahnnell’s screenplay with Ryan Gosling attached to star. But then the strikes happened so Cianfrance & Gosling left the project and Wahnnell came back with a different cast.
I really liked The Invisible Man back in 2020 (that was actually the last movie I saw in theaters prior to the pandemic shutting everything down). But I was kind of excited for Cianfrance to direct a mainstream horror film, it was also just nice to see Cianfrance come back since he hasn’t directed a film since Light Between Oceans in 2016 which was not well received but I liked. While I think Wahnnell is a strong writer, his visuals always leave something to improve. I think The Invisible Man was his best shot film and this looks decently shot too, but I can’t help but wonder what could have been.
