The Daily Mail burying the lede again

Amazon Prime has clarified that the full version of the film still remains on their platform.

So it's literally still on the platform, it's just they also added the abridged version, and some people on Twitter got confused ("SLAMMED", "OUTRAGED"). And then the Daily Mail reported on it - slow news day, I guess. They are quite literally the only ones, from a quick google search.

Slow news day? Nah, that's just how the Daily Mail rolls. They are an absolutely bottom tier, sensationalist, tabloid rag that's entire business model is manufacturing outrage bait for UK boomers. So of course they buried the lede.

"Amazon is ruining a Christmas Classic!!!" and implying they did it because of "political correctness" or "wokeness" or whatever, sells way better to their angry boomer demographic than the truth... which is that some elements of the movie are still under copyright due to legal shenanigans which prevented the whole movie from staying in the public domain, and so that still copyrighted stuff often gets removed from broadcasts and streaming services (not just on Amazon).

After a number of subsequent sales, Republic Pictures ultimately took over the rights to the film. At the time the movie was filmed and released, under the Copyright Act of 1909, U.S. copyright protection lasted 28 years from publication with proper notice or registration, and could be renewed for an additional 28 years by filing a proper renewal registration with the Copyright Office. But in 1974, when 28 years had passed, Republic Pictures failed to file a renewal for the film’s copyright protection. The film lapsed into the public domain, meaning anyone could show the film without obtaining permission or paying royalties. As a result, the film was repeatedly shown throughout the holidays on public television, and was made widely available on tape. Over the next 20 years, Stern’s story and James Stewart’s starring role, would finally gain its “holiday classic” status.

But the copyright-saga continued in 1993. While Republic Pictures had failed to renew copyright over the film in 1974, they still retained rights to the original story, “The Greatest Gift,” and also purchased rights to the film’s music. Relying on the recent Supreme Court case Stewart v. Abend, 495 U.S. 207 (1990), Republic Pictures notified all television networks to stop playing It’s a Wonderful Life without the payment of royalties. Republic Pictures then entered into an exclusive licensing arrangement with NBC, where It’s a Wonderful Life can be seen twice a year.

Since you're here, I hope you had a great Christmas morning as well! My wife bought me Panettone without the cristalyzed and I'm a little pissed. But I'll live!

And thanks! We actually did our Christmas morning traditions (family breakfast, present opening, etc) yesterday morning, since my sister, nephews, and BiL headed off to Jamaica at 5am this morning. So this morning me and my parents just slept in instead of doing anything special, which was great in its own way... especially after gorging ourselves at the Christmas Eve feast with all our extended family. :P

I hope you had a great Christmas morning too! (other than getting the wrong Panettone) :P

p.s. I'm Italian-Canadian, so panettone being given to everyone for Christmas is a tradition with our family too. But I'm surprised to hear it's also a tradition in Brazil. Is your wife of Italian heritage or is panettone a tradition there for a lot of non-Italian people as well, like it's slowly becoming here in Canada? It is delicious (and waaaaaay better than British style fruit cake!), so I am not entirely surprised, if so. ;)

Edit: I decided to look it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panettone

Panettone is widely available in South America, including in Argentina, Brazil, Chile (see: pan de Pascua), Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Ecuador.

Peru is the world's biggest consumer of panettone, surpassing Italy, with 1.3–kg of panettone per person in a year for Peru.

Huh, TIL, and neat! I had no idea it had spread so far, or that it was that popular in Peru! I know there is a huge Italian diaspora population in Uruguay, so I guess maybe the tradition spread from there?

We got plenty of Italian immigrants specially in São Paulo. We got more Italians than the US but they're more spread out so it doesn't feel this way since they are/were way more assimilated. Argentina is like extremely Italian. People say they speak Italian with a Spanish accent. Or maybe the other way around.

There are many brands of panettone in Brazilian Christmas. Some resemble the traditional recipe you may be familiar with.

Some are a Brazilian abherations that are more like candy or dessert. "Chotocone" is just chocolate bread and the amount of chocolate increases every year. People just don't care for crystallized fruit as much. I predict that, at some point, people will realize they're just gobbling up melted chocolate, put it in a cup an be done with it.

The chocolatization of Panettone makes me angry, not gonna lie lol.

Merry Christmas, my Italian Canadian friend!

There are a bunch of panettone varieties that are commonly available up here too, though I've never tried any other than a pistachio one (which was decent). A lot of those "abherations" as you call them actually are still considered traditional though since even in Italy there are tons of regional varieties that have developed over time... even various chocolate ones (e.g. Piedmont is known for its hazelnuts, and its chocolate, being on the border of France and Switzerland, so panettone from there often has one or both). So there's no need to get angry or offended over them. ;)

Like you, I still prefer the ultra-traditional "classic" kind (which is usually called 'panettone classico' up here) with just the candied fruit and sometimes some nuts as well though, and served with a dollop of fresh mascarpone cream. But, not going to lie, I have definitely been tempted to try one of the Piedmont hazelnut chocolate varieties, since I absolutely love hazelnut chocolate. :P

Think as a glass made of bread that is filled with melted chocolate! There's a thin layer of bread and another layer of chocolate on the outside lol. That's where we're getting at around here :P

Ah... okay. You actually got me fully on your side with that detail. That actually does sound like an abomination. Panettone is all about the beautiful bread! It's the best damn part of it! LOL :P...

The more traditional brand available on most grocery stores would be the Visconti. It's also good. But if you want actually authentic, traditional panettone you must seek specialized bakeries if you can find them. My mother is a semi professional bread maker and she did traditional panettone once. It was quite good, and truly more bread and less desert.

Oh, I've actually seen Bauducco ones in stores up here! I didn't realize they were Brazilian though. Neat. I will have to pick one up next time I see one just to give it a try, and compare it to the boxed one we usually get and give to people (Bauli Panettone Classico or their Panettone Di Verona, which has a crunchy sugar glaze on top).

Most years for Christmas (including this one) my godmother bakes a big one for us all to have at Christmas Eve dinner though, and it's pretty hard to beat... so comparing the Bauducco one to that wouldn't be fair. ;)

Also, good God. After googling for more images of "Panetone trufado" I can see why you call them abominations now. People might as well eat be eating a bowl of chocolate pudding with a slice of white bread smooshed on top. That is NOT panettone!

It's probably the same version that Rifftrax has on their platform. While It's A Wonderful Life is in the public domain, there is a portion that someone (Warner Brothers?) was able to argue was a separate piece from the rest of the movie and they were able to get the government to grant them copyright for that portion of the movie.

So while Amazon claims they have the original version also on the platform, they're probably steering people towards the one that omits the portion still under copyright (the best part) so they don't have to pay anyone to steam it for you.

Amazon Prime has clarified that the full version of the film still remains on their platform.

Moreover, it appears the version of the film was released following a copyright dispute regarding the scene, which was based on a short story.
