Speaking as someone familiar with the current state of this tech, it’s nowhere near ready to be used in this way. I have to assume it’s a stunt to try to make a quick buck off people who are less in-the-know. I didn’t even need to watch the trailer to know (though it certainly confirmed my intuition) that this is going to be unwatchable drivel.
This tech holds great promise that will be aided over the next decade or so by improvements in character/scenery continuity, fine motion control, background detail fidelity, lip sync, higher output resolution, better coherence over time for longer-duration shots, etc. It’s gonna be awesome. We’re just not there yet, and there’s a long way to go still. At this stage, what I’m interested in seeing is how AI video can be used in conjunction with traditional production. It could be great for establishing shots, for example, with a little cleanup in post. I assume little bits like that will begin to seep into popular shows and movies, but it won’t be shouted from the hilltops that that’s what they’re doing. And if the VFX houses are doing their jobs, no one will be the wiser about it.
I've seen music videos that I'm fairly sure are AI generated clips interspersed with scenes of the band playing, but that's a much easier lift than a full movie.
