TIL that William Hurt won best actor for playing Molina in 1985 version. Impressively progressive in an era where the government wouldn't even say the word AIDS.

Thankfully Hollywood has always been more Liberal than the US government. And KotSW wasn't the only 80s movie to address the topic either. E.g. An Early Frost (also from 1985) did a really good job of it, and is actually a really good movie too.
And even a few television shows of the era had episodes focused on the subject as well. E.g. Designing Women (a super popular 80s-90s sitcom) had an episode in 1987 called "Killing all the Right People" that was remarkably progressive for the time. Matt Baume even made a short video about how groundbreaking it was: When Designing Women Taught America About AIDS.
p.s. Also worth noting, the 1985 KotSW film was an adaptation of the novel, and wasn't a musical. The musical adaptation of the novel wasn't developed until 1993. ;)

I'm actually pretty excited for this one since I love Broadway musicals, and actually have a somewhat personal connection to KotSW. My father's high-school friend, Brent Carver (RIP), won a Best Actor Tony for his portrayal of Molina in the original Toronto and Broadway productions. I don't know much about Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, who is similarly playing Molina in this movie... but Diego Luna (Rogue One/Andor) is an excellent actor and surprisingly good singer too, so it should be fun to see him play Valentin.
p.s. I would have posted the official Lionsgate channel teaser trailer, but it's been geo-restricted to only being watchable in the US for some weird reason, whereas this one from J-Lo's channel has no restrictions.
