It's fun seeing more stuff (the jellyfish hot air balloons) from the original 90s treatment come back. It's wild to think how long of an effort it's been to make these movies happen. I think that's where they really excel -- simply feats of film production. It's always incredible to see talented people making things at this level.

Yeah, in the positive and the negative sense. The second film kinda felt like one big tech show to me. Amazing visuals, cinematography and graphical effects, but the story felt a bit stale and there was to much forced nostalgia. It was a movie I watched for seeing Na'Vi underwater, not for its storyline.

It’s the only film I actually bothered to go to the cinema for in the last ~5 years. Walked out I think 3/4 through. It wasn’t egregiously bad, but boring and long enough that I’d rather spend my Sunday afternoon doing something else.

I watched the first one as a kid. Experiencing it in 3D at the cinema was nothing short of a magical experience. The second one, while very good looking, didn’t have this aspect of exciting new technology to go along with it. I’m sure there’s plenty of excitement for vfx nerds, but nothing a layman could get excited about. The story and characters are developed just enough to drive the exciting visuals.

Also, a new animated series, ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ slated for 26 episodes (2, 13-episode “books”). Follows the avatar after Korra in a post-cataclysm world.
