Edward Berger is a type of a dying breed of filmmaker. The workman, or the journeyman, filmmaker. A middle brow artist, a non-auteur, who does not possess any specific style and does not have any throughline to their filmography. It’s what Ron Howard is, what Carol Reed was. The studio system that supported these types of filmmakers isn’t really a thing anymore. But it’s great that someone like Berger has been able to get projects off the ground since his highly successful adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front.
I didn’t care for that film but I loved Conclave so consider signed up for this.
